Interview with the lovely Tanaz of Miss Genki!

Q. Please tell us a little about your self and Miss Genki:/Q. What made you start making jewellery?

My name is Tanaz and my life has always lacked creative energy. I have been learning jewellery making and always know trends. I just Love it. It just never occurred to me to actually start my own Jewellery so I did. I just think you should follow your heart and just do what makes you happy. OK here is a little more about me: I lived half my life in Iran, the other half in Cardiff Wales. Then one day I realised how I needed more and I should experience one other culture. I have always had a love for Japan. But I was too scared to go alone, in the end I believe Japan chose me as the job as an English teacher came my way and before I knew it I was in training and getting ready. The second I got on the plane it hit me I was going to Japan and it was scary, but mostly exciting. It was the best think i ever did. Took the chance to the pursuit of happiness and I know myself much more because of it. It was there that I discovered my love for Japanese fashion and there the seed of the idea for Miss Genki was planted.

Miss Genki is based on the wacky, fun, cute and uniqueness of Japanese fashion. It was so inspiring to see people dress in what made them happy and it was all so much fun. I felt free. So I wanted to share that with others. As well as wanting my ideas and my creativity to be seen. For the first time in my life I was doing things based on what made ME happy and not all the things I was always meant to be. I feel free and happy when I am buying new items looking for new idea and just everything to do with Miss Genki. This is why I named it Miss Genki, which reflects all this. Genki means happy, joyful, being OK and the word Genki itself is the exact way I felt. I truly know what Genki means now and before Japan I was never truly happy. So you could say I have finally found myself and let myself feel the good things in life. Life is too short and what counts is how happy you are and seeing all the good you are blessed with not concentrating on the bad or things you are not give.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I live in Cardiff, Wales.

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make?

My favourite pieces at the moment are Owls and recently have elephant necklaces too. I don't know why but absolutely love Owls, they are just so pretty. I also love "Love" necklaces and earrings. Anything that's romantic based, even red lips (which I have recently got). Oh the romantic stuff does not at all reflect my own life. I just think Loving yourself first before anyone else is most important. There are a lot I don't like about myself, but think as women we are too quick to judge ourselves. I do it all the time myself mainly how i have gained weight or how i want to be back to my smaller size. I just like to have something that reminds me of who I am and that I like myself regardless of all the other things I think I should be. Its a nice feeling.

Q. What are your best sellers?

I think the owl necklaces have been most popular and the camera. I guess because they are different and they are things you can't find most places. Most of my items are quite popular as they are all quite unique.

Q. Do you wear your jewellery yourself?

Yes. I buy what I like. My favourite pieces at the moment are Owl and elephants. I absolutely love owls not sure why as they do seem creepy, but in jewellery I like their roundness and big eyes.
I have this one owl that I adore and don't wanna part with it. I know the whole idea is to sell it but I just love most things so always have an extra for myself because once I don't I remember how pretty it was and wish I had one for me, lol.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

My main inspiration is Tokyo's fashion scene. I just notice everyday things and as I buy from all kinds of places, I just go through pictures and buy what I like. I just think what would I like to wear to make me happy or put a smile on my face. I love pearls, but also like anything funky and fun. I just think fashion should be fun. As we grow up we just seem to forget how to have fun, so we have to do so in most things we do. In what we wear (I don't mean looking silly, just to dress for ourselves), what we do and surround ourselves with good vibes.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

This is more of of a fantasy, but my big dream would be for Miss Genki to be a brand and to sell in big shops under my own name. Then as my biggest inspiration has been Tokyo would like to have a little boutique either in Harajuku (which has the funkiest boutiques) or in the most famous department store in Shibuya called 109. These were places I would shop at and I think if I ever make it that far, I know I have done something very right. As for me I see myself in 5years making/selling jewellery as a full-time career and being more creative with my life. Hopefully also have time to take breaks and not be how I am now which is work full time and Miss Genki in all the free time I get.

Q. Please tell us a little about yourself and Kokokelli

My name is Kelly 'Womble' Johnson and I'm 29 years old. Kokokelli is my crafting name and I started making handmade jewellery & greeting cards in January 2010.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I'm from Oldbury in the West Midlands (not far from Birmingham/Dudley/West Bromwich/Smethwick)

Q. What made you get into jewellery and card making?

I've always been very arty farty and praised highly for my creative talents. I saw some jewellery that a friend had made at a jewellery workshop run at the Birmingham Bead Shop (http://www.thebirminghambeadshop.co.uk/) and just thought to myself "yeah I could do that!" so I bought a small starter kit with the tools and findings off eBay and it went from there really. I used my best friend as a kind of guinea pig as it was her birthday the end of January lol so I made her a handmade birthday card and made her a necklace, bracelet & earring set which she absolutely loved!!

Q. What are your most popular items?

I don't really have any 'best sellers' so to speak but I seem to sell more bracelets more than anything at the moment as they are reasonably priced and different from those you see in the shops (as is everything else I make)

Q.What do you enjoy making the most?

I absolutely love making custom orders for people as each one is unique and one of a kind! It's also a challenge and I love a good challenge! Especially when there's certain things you need to find for a certain piece. I've done some lovely jewellery sets, badge bracelets and a beautiful wedding card which was just a masterpiece in my eyes! lol

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I get asked this question quite a bit lol I get my inspiration from many things I guess, stuff I like, stuff I've grown up with, people I've known, I even run ideas past my mom sometimes lol. They'll be days when something will just pop in my head or I'll be out and about and I'll see something and it'll just trigger off a huge light bulb in my head lol.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

I would love nothing more than to have my own proper business from home doing what I do best and making lots of money from it lol (who wouldn't) plus that way I'd be able to start the family I've always wanted and still work at the same time.

Q. What are you doing for Halloween?

To be honest I don't really do the whole Halloween thing anymore. We went trick or treating a couple of times as kids but that's about it. It's not really the same as it used to be now especially round here, sometimes you're scared to answer the door when you've got masked hoodies banging who are only after your money anyway! It may change when I have kids and it would be nice to take them trick or treating while they're young so they can have some fun, we'll just have to wait and see lol.

Q. Please tell us a little about your self and Funki Munki Badges

Hi, I'm Leah, I'm 36 and I created Funki Munki badges in 2008 along with my fella James. It came about because I needed a creative outlet after having to give up work in early 2008 due to an as-yet undiagnosed autoimmune disease.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

Hastings in East Sussex. I love living here. There's a vibrant alternative scene and I love living by the sea.

Q. What made you start making your own badges?

I've always loved dinky badges and I always had slogan or picture badges on various different bags, and being a typical woman, I have a lot of bags! After I became ill I had the idea of buying ready-made badges in bulk to sell on eBay, but I soon had customers asking me for custom badges. After a quick discussion between ourselves, we decided to start up making our own. It's been a real progression of trial and error, various different printers and a constantly evolving overall standard, so all in all we're very excited about the future.

Q. How do you come up with ideas for your slogans and images?

Everything in life inspires me. It might be a colour I see, a shape, or something a friend says that makes my mind ping off on a tangent. It's like word association, or a never-ending brain-storming session. I have little writing pads everywhere as I never know when an idea will strike. A lot of times I'm in bed and my brain will spew out a few ideas, so I jot them down in my phone so I don't wake James up with my restless tossing and turning. I've always been an 'ideas person' and I'm really glad I found an outlet or else I think I'd go barmy.

Q. What are your most popular designs?

Our Pac Man and Ghost badges sell like hotcakes, as do a lot of the ruder or cheekier slogan badges. My favourite time of the year by far is Halloween, and we sell a lot more badges in this quarter of the year because of Halloween and Christmas. I'm a big kid over Halloween and Christmas so I absolutely LOVE making these badges even more than usual. It's genuinely a labour of love for me, and I credit my sanity to it.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

In life I'm inspired by strong women. I come from a family of women who are as tough as old boots because they've had to be yet manage to still have a kind word for everyone and a twinkle in their eye. Maya Angelou and Tairrie B from My Ruin are a couple of my sheroes... and there we go, I think I've just unintentionally come up with another slogan! (You're my shero!) I have such a love for strong women that I have a couple of large tattoos of women - a half-sleeve, bio-mechanical Giger-esque woman on my left arm, and a manga style Lady Luck on my back.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

I'd like to see us expand to making all sizes of badges, as well as mouse mats, mugs, key rings, magnets, bottle openers, you name it! I also want to get together with other local craftsters to perhaps share a small local space, and support the hand made industry as a whole, by buying handmade as much as possible myself, and publicising the crafts of others. On a personal level I hope to beat this illness, or at least manage it enough for me to become a mum.

Q. Please tell us a little about yourself and Crafty Chics

My name is Charlie I’m married to Mr Smith and have 3 quite fabulous kids, Tyler, Macy Mai, and our latest Big Ron … Pre children I studied fashion promotion and graphic design and have always had a passion for fashion and accessories. Being a Mummy meant I could give up full time work and concentrate on making a lovely home and lovely things. My most favoured treasures in the world are my family and friends, and my LV bag. I love vintage lace and Sunday morning car booting followed by lunch at Nana's.

Crafty Chics was created out of the love of all things vintage, I hope you will find a unique selection of accessories made from some gorgeous new materials as well as some very unique vintage pieces. Some beautiful flowery Headbands, Tiaras, Hair Combs and Bobby Pins perfect for any occasion, from everyday wear through to Mother of the bride.
Plus some beautifully handmade Shoulder Pads, perfect to dress up any outfit, some fantastic shoe clips to vamp up a pair of shoes or flip flops, and some very individual rings and brooches. I work alot on individual customers requirements.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I am based in Leigh On Sea in Essex, it is a beautiful area of the world to live.

Q. What made you get into crafting?

In my teens I started making jewellery for myself and friends, mainly through the desire to have items that were individual. Probably like many other crafters and designers I have dabbled in lots of crafts including card making and home wares over the years. But my heart has always been in accessories.

Q. What your most favourite things to make?

That's a hard one I love making the shoulder accessories, I love the time I spend making them and that each one is unique in its own way. But give me a piece of lace and some ribbon and I'll happily make anything.

Q. What are your most popular items?

I would say the elasticated headbands are very popular, whether it be with a single ribbon flower or a headband with a cluster of lace flowers. They are so versatile and different flowers and colouring can change them from something to throw on with jeans and a shirt to something to wear for a night out.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from all manor of places. I love looking out for new trends from the catwalk, but I also take inspiration from my surroundings and nature. Sometimes just looking at a pile of ribbon and lace together on my table can be enough to come up with a new design.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

Crafty Chics is still very new and I am keen to let it grow naturally, and have fun along the way. I have recently started selling through boutiques locally here in Leigh On Sea, so I am keen to expand on that. Probably every designers dream is to own their own boutique which I would obviously love. I would say though in five years times I would just like to see myself happily creating accessories with happy customer x

Q. Tell us a little about yourself and CandyDoll Couture

Hi! I'm Emma, owner of CandyDoll Couture. I am 23 years old and love anything Kawaii! I have always had an interest in arts and crafts ever since I was a little girl and decided to study Art and Design at college. I then went onto studying Textiles which is where I found my love for sewing and print! When I was 17 I started buying in band t-shirts and reconstructing them into cute dresses and tops with contrasting fabrics. I then moved onto Jewellery making. I found out about Fimo (Polymer clay) and discovered all the amazing things you could do with it which is where I began to come up with quirky, colourful charms and pendants.
I started CandyDoll Couture officially in 2008 on Etsy.com. I felt there was a gap in the market in the UK for Kawaii and Lolita jewellery and decided to come up with pieces that were inspired from childhood characters such as Hello Kitty and Barbie. I then started sourcing charms from Japan and China, mixing these with kitsch and handmade charms made by me. In 2009 I decided to leave Etsy and set up my dot com. Etsy is a great place to showcase your creations and find unique items but I felt that I wanted to take my business further and be in complete control of my website.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I live in the North East of England, dreaming of one day moving to New York!

Q. What made you get into crafting?

My grandmother is a knitter and seamstress so I was brought up with the crafts. I used to sit with her and make plush toys and miniature clothes for my Barbies. I also loved drawing and would constantly make cards for my family members! Then, when I was at college I had the best Art tutor. She always encouraged me to push the boundaries and try new things. She really helped me to discover what it was I really wanted to do.

Q. What are your favourite items to make? Do you make custom pieces?

My favourite items to make are the fimo food such as the Marshmallow charm bracelet and glittery Cupcake bracelets. I also love making little purses, which I have recently started adding to the site! I plan to make some make-up bags and Ipod cases also.

Q. What are your most popular items?

The rainbow and clouds kawaii felt brooch is very popular, along with the dead bunny phone charm. My cute greetings cards are also popular at craft fairs!

Q. Do you wear your pieces yourself?

I do. I tend to make things and then decide I must keep this one, and that one, as I love them so much! I normally wear my hair clips and bracelets.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

Japanese street fashion is my main inspiration. I love all the different styles such as Decora, Lolita, Visual Kei etc. I love the FRUiTS books by Shoichi Aoki and also the Gothic and Lolita Bibles. My favourite designers are Betsey Johnson and Tarina Tarantino. I also love Doe Deere (aka LimeCrime) and Shrinkle too!

Q. Do you have any advice or tips for anyone else thinking about selling there own crafts?

All I would say is just to follow your heart and do what you love. The best thing to do as well if you are selling your crafts online is to build up a network and promote, promote, promote your wares! Carry your business cards with you everywhere, you never know who you might meet!

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

I would love to eventually sell my screen printed fabric and t-shirts, stock my items in various boutiques and open my own bricks and mortar shop!

Q. Tell us a little about yourself and Handsome & Lace:

Handsome&Lace started with the reconstruction of ties. I have always loved neck ties so to reconstruct them into beautiful things for women makes me feel productive and excited! I have made things such as hairbands, necklaces, earrings and more all from preserved ties! I have been dabbling in some other upcycled accessories... all with a very classic feel to them. My favourite era's are the 30's and 40's and tend to bring these elements into my designs.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I'm based out of my home in Toronto, ON. Canada has shown me some really universal styles that make it very easy for me to create very unique things without being frowned upon. There are so many talented people in this city so you have to be on top of your game or you will end up blending in. That challenge for me is a great one! It keeps me innovative and on my toes at all times.

Q. What made you get into crafting?

I have always been creative and was nurtured as a kid by my mom's side of the family...They are all neurotic but creative. It kind of goes hand in hand.lol I started redesigning neck ties in 2007 and still find new ways to reconstruct them!; ) I have so many ties in my home that they take up about 30% of the space in here! It's very exciting to look at them every day. Very motivating...I can tell these ties are not happy as ties and make promises to get to all of them eventually.

Q. What are your favourite items to make? Do you make custom pieces?

I LOVE making hairbands in particular...I started with hairbands as one of my first accessory projects. I ended up selling 10 the day after making a few and knew that I had a market. Something about a good hairband really makes someone stand out as confident and for the most part you have to be when wearing Handsome&Lace. It is one of my personal missions to help women gain confidence in any way I can. I also LOVE challenges so custom orders are my pride and joy. I recently just make 10 velvet bowties for a woman's wedding and she loved them! There is always that worry that they get rejected.lol

Q. What are your most popular items?

Hairbands are number #1 with Handsome&Lace right now. I would love to be the IT place to shop for hairbands...eventually...I also get a lot of sales on my tiny tie earrings which I haven't made in a few months...I guess I should get on that! I also see that my newly designed guitar straps are becoming very popular with bands! Tokyo Police Club and Oh No Oh My have been known to wear Handsome&Lace reversible guitar straps..also made from neck ties!

Q. Do you wear your pieces yourself?

ALWAYS! I wouldn't sell something if I didn't love it myself. My hope is to stay true to the uniqueness and quality of my pieces while keeping them true Handsome&Lace originals. I also feel super cute when wearing my designs. Why not feel good when you can, right?

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

Silverscreen movies play a HUGE role in my designs. I love the strong black and white ensembles that say 'classy'. I actually came up with my collar necklaces from watching The Three Stooges...I love this show plus love manipulating what the stooges are wearing by coming up with the feminine version for modern times is really fun!

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time? I'd love to have my own little boutiue, and sell all around the world. I don't need to be rich or wealthy. Just a leader in unique accessories : )

Interview - Silk Seduction

Q. Greetings Silk Seduction, please tell us who you are and what you do?

Hello there, my name is Silk Seduction and I am a Burlesque Artist and Pin-Up Model. I originally trained as a classical ballerina at Liverpool Theatre School and am also trained in Musical Theatre, Commercial Dance, Classical Acting and Opera. My circumstances changed and I completed a BA (Hons) Event Management which I am following with an MA Public Relations due to start in October. Career wise I had completely changed path but my passion for dance remained. I found a Burlesque school called the Fantasy Showgirl Academy lead by Miss Fan-Teasy and the rest as they say is history. I am about to graduate and be unleashed into the big wide world of Burlesque, with a tour of our very successful show 'Rocky Horror with a Teasy Twist' about to commence, and several modelling assignments planned, life is very exciting right now :).

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I am based in the sunny seaside town of Bournemouth.

Q. What made you get into the modeling and burlesque scene?

I have always danced, my mum claims I used to steal her scarves and danced before I could walk. But I like many dance professionals completely lost my confidence and vowed to leave dance as a sad memory. I found the Fantasy Showgirl Academy by accident and am so glad I did. It restored my confidence and even persuaded me to revisit the stage, now the girls can't keep my away! I am sponsored by the amazing Tassels and Trinkets and my next show is 'Freak 'n' Tease' at The Winchester, Bournemouth.

In terms of modelling, it is something that preceded my discovery of Burlesque but had never really taken off. I had done a nude photo shoot for a photographer friend, and a couple of burlesque themed photos hoots for a local photographer, but it is only in the last year that interest has been growing rapidly. I have found Pin-Up to be the genre that's suits me as it fits my love of vintage, cheesecake pin-up and of course burlesque. I am honoured to be one of four models representing Juliet Killed Romeo and Juliet Loves Romeo.

Q. Are there any photographers, clubs or other models out there who you would like to work with?

I love the use of colour by Black Orchard Photography, the unusual location ideas from Dark slide Photography and will always adore the timeless images produced by Eddie Ions. In terms of performing I would love to perform in as many different locations as possible, both in the UK and Worldwide.

Q. You list costume construction as one of your passion, what do you make?

I worked for a local dance shop, which had a bespoke department. I took this over and loved the excitement of producing garments from fully crystallized ballroom gowns, wedding dresses and cheer leading catsuits, to tutus and carnival costumes. The world really was your oyster and no day was ever the same. I now use these skills to construct and develop my own costumes although there have been enquiries about designing independently so watch this space.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

My aim to is to create the most enchanting most memorable performances possible and am constantly inspired by Miss Fan-Teasy and my fellow showgirls, who's creativity astounds me. I am also inspired by the classic Pin-Up images by Gil Elvgren which never age or lose their charm.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

I would like to have built a successful brand in 'Silk Seduction' and hope to continue with the Fantasy Showgirls alongside performing internationally. I would also like to have built up a strong portfolio and continue to represent several independent brands.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself and Dreadlocks on Rocks

Hi! :D My name is Cristina, I'm a 22 year old Graphic Design student with a passion for tangling hair (not the most glamorous hobby it's true). I moved to the UK about a year ago when I started University and I noticed that there was a bit of a niche in the dread locking business, so I said why not put my "gift" to good use? And that's how Dreadlocks on the Rocks was born...

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I am based in the centre of Birmingham - the home of all things weird and awesome.

Q. What made you start this business?

Well, I come from the eastern part of Europe, where dreadlocks are quite popular, therefore 10% of the population knows how to make them (more or less :P ) so it was fairly easy for me to learn - it's like a trade secret, you have to pick it up from watching other people do it and eventually doing it yourself . When I moved to Birmingham I noticed that there weren't many people who did dreadlocks, and even less places where you could go to get dreadlocks if you have Caucasian hair. So I started my little home-run business in order to provide for the people who wanted an awesome set of locks on their head. I also offer maintenance sessions to those who need to tame their locks and help people remove their dreadlocks so they won't need to shave their heads :P

Q. Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about getting dreadlocks?

One very important thing about dreadlocks is that they're not your average funky hair-do, you can't really get them today and take them out 2 weeks later (well you can, but why would somebody go through all that trouble). Getting dreadlocks is a commitment, so I advise anyone who wants to get them to do their research. Also, they don't look perfect from the beginning - as they mature they start looking better and better. I sometimes compare the whole process to having a baby - when you have them done it takes a good few hours and it hurts a bit, but once you're done with that you're so happy that you forget about everything else. The only difference is that dreadlocks don't grow into teenagers who start arguing with you :))

Q. Do you have dreads yourself? And whats your favourite things about them?

Yes, I have had my dreadlocks for two years now and I can honestly say that getting them has probably been the best hairstyle related decision I have ever taken - they don't pee on the rug and they don't keep you up at night...hell, I'd pick dreadlocks over a hamster any day :) But if you have a hamster you can still get dreadlocks he-he! Seriously, dreadlocks are the best thing ever.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

This might sound like a cliché but I guess I'm inspired by the people around me. I wish everyone could just calm down for a moment and just...relax and take it easy, maybe that sounds too easygoing but really, I think the world needs less things to worry about; with dreadlocks at least you don't have to worry about combing or styling your hair, so one less worry in the world :) People should be happier :D

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

I'd like to open my own little shop, somewhere on a narrow little street, where I could sell funky little handmade things and continue making dreadlocks. And I would have lots of beanbag chairs...definitely.

I come from Spain. I was born in Cádiz, and since I was a child, I felt attracted by crafting, it was one of my favourite sunjects at school. Through the years, it has became my way of living...

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I live in Galicia since 1992, it,s placed on the northeast of Spain. There are strong Celtic roots in this country, and it is reflected on the arts in general.

Q. What made you start dress making and crafting?

Since I was a child, when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I used to say "fashion designer", I wanted to create beautiful clothes and accessories, so I was always making clothes for my dolls, and painting dresses. I think I had it really clear.

Q. What are your favourite items to create?

I enjoy a lot when making corsets and mini hats, I love to see their creation, what they become when they're finished.

Q. What are your most popular items?

I could say corsets, girls love it, even though they're not the cheapest products amongst my creations..... I guess that it is because they can be made at the wish of the costumer, and choose fabrics, colours, embroideries, embellishments....

Q. Where can people buy your creations? Do you do custom orders?

My creations are not found on stores, sorry! Anyone interested can contact me and order anything. And yes, I do custom orders. On the fact, the immense majority of the things I do are requested by my costumers. They ask me something, and generally, they accept suggestions, I guess I'm lucky about it...

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

It may sound as a topic, but inspiration is everywhere, and it comes when it's less expected! It may be a film, a book, a vintage image, generally I love to take a look at some of my books about history of fashion, and look for details. So, the results can be both Gothic, Steam punk, Victorian, Retro or vintage.... but never the things you,ll find on an ordinary store.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

On a backstage, looking at models dressed with my creations on the catwalk. Or creating clothes for a historical film, or doing historical reproductions for a Fashion museum.... who knows!! Anyway, I can't imagine my life and my future without a nail in my hand....

My name is Pam Cheema and I am stylist and Director of Frock On Vintage. Frock On Vintage specialises in affordable, high quality and all-round fabulous vintage items for all fun-loving fashionista's. Q. Where in the world are you based?

I am based in Birmingham but travel all over the UK with Frock On Vintage.

Q. What made you start this label?

Spending time out in Kenya doing charity work with the Masai inspired me to set up Frock On Vintage. I supported street children, AIDS and HIV sufferers and taught English in local schools. I learnt so much from the experience that when I returned to the UK I decided that it was time to pursue my real dream. I began my new venture by juggling my full time job as a TV researcher with running a stall selling vintage clothes every Saturday at The Custard Factory in Digbeth. The feedback I was getting from customers was amazing so I decided that it was only natural progression to set up my own website. I launched www.frockonvintage.co.uk in August 2010 and its going great so far :-)

Q. What are your most popular items?

The gorgeous vintage sequin garments I sell are really popular! They are so beautifully made and the designs are to die for! Every girls likes a bit of sparkle in her wardrobe for parties, weddings, events etc. Aside from that vintage bags also go down really well with my customers as do the fur coats....especially now with winter slowly looming!

Q. Do you wear vintage clothing yourself? Whats your favourite style?

I adore vintage clothing and wear it all the time, hence me setting up Frock On Vintage! I just love the fact that vintage clothing is totally unique and that you know that you wont see 101 other girls wearing the same. I tend to mix Vintage pieces with those off the High street for a modern but edgy look. I don't have a specific style as such, its always evolving and what I wear often depends on how I'm feeling on a certain day! If i did have to to choose my favourite style it would definitely be rock chick/Gothic Glam! I love silver and black and cant go anywhere without my cropped leather jacket!

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

This sounds massively soppy but its my friends and family are the ones who truly inspire and motivate me. The love and support of my nearest and dearest is so special and nothing beats that. I am also inspired by the people who are not afraid to make a statement with what that they wear and are fashion slaves! Most of these people are the ones who wear vintage and are not afraid to think outside of the box when it comes to embracing their own personal style.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

I would love Frock On Vintage to become a household name and own my own shop in Birmingham. I think the city has very little to offer vintage fashionista's and for that reason I would want to bring them something really special! I already have a mental image of what the shop would like...crazy but true lol! Aside from this what I ultimately what I do is continue putting smiles on people's faces and providing them with amazing Frock On Vintage garments!

A: My name is Soo, and i am a 44 year old mother of 3. I've always been what you could describe as 'arty'. and i just love making things! whether that be a piece of jewellery, a painting, or as i have done more recently, a bag!
I founded The DeityChain in 2008 and it consists of me and my children..well, when i say children, my boys are men now, lol! They help in lots of ways, with the packaging, marketing, etc...and making me lots of cups of coffee when i am busy making orders!
My daughter is incredibly talented: watch out for some of her work appearing in the 'art' section of The DeityChain website! :)

Q. Where in the world are you based?

A: I am based in the North-West of England, near Manchester.

Q.What made you start making jewellery?

A: about 5 years ago i started making my own cards to send to friends and family: i used to attach little charms and pieces of jewellery to them, and after lots of suggestions to sell them, i started doing just that!...at craft fairs, car boots, etc.... then in 2008 i started The DeityChain: by this point i had already started to make jewellery which was selling faster than the cards(!), and i built a website which i have just recently updated as i thought the old site was looking a bit tired and jaded!

Q. What are your most popular pieces?

A: My bag charms are very popular, understandably(!!), the faerie necklaces and wraparound bracelets have always sold well and the little heart boxes i have just introduced seem to be going down well too!

Q. Do you wear the jewellery you make yourself?

A: of course! promote, promote, promote, lol! ...but seriously, yes, the great thing about being able to make it yourself is you can make exactly what you really like, and change it as often as you like! I also always, always have my bag charms and fabric hearts attached to my handbag.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

A: well now, that is an easy one! F-A-E-R-I-E-S! yeah, i know, I'm a middle-aged woman who is STILL hung up on faeries, but what can i say? i love them! ...i just love the whole romance of them, the idea that they are watching, protecting and causing mischief....yeah, faeries definitely... .....and hearts .....and flowers.... I'm just an old romantic at heart! :)

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

A: gosh...well....i would love love LOVE to be running The DeityChain as a full-time business.
i am certainly happiest fiddling about making pieces of jewellery or painting..
My dream is for The DeityChain to be a recognised name..... a label... something people would know just by looking at it...that would be great!

Q. Tell us a little about yourself and Toxic Cherry Jewellery

I have been designing jewellery since 2009 but never really took it all that seriously. I'm a naturally creative person and a few months back when a friend mentioned she'd love to start a jewellery business, I had that little light bulb moment. I already had all the designs so all I had to do was get down to the practical side. I give credit to my mom for suggesting materials and such lol. Toxic Cherry launched officially as a business at the end of August this year and I appreciate all the support so much.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

Based in Birmingham in the UK but have customers all across the UK and hopefully will expand internationally.

Q. What made you get into crafting?

As I said earlier, I'd always love designing pieces and it was my friend that spurred me on to turning them into solid creations :)

Q. What are your favourite items to make?

I love making all of them. Honestly lol. I would never make an item that I wouldn't love to wear myself so I put a lot of effort into design and making them.

Q. What are your most popular items?

It seems quite equal across the board at the moment. Customers compliment the 'razzle dazzle' pieces the most but I've had a lot of interest in the clay hearts and leopard print bows.

Q. Do you wear your jewellery & accessories yourself?

Yes all the time. :) Like I said, I would never make anything I didn't love myself or didn't deem 'fit' to wear. Plus, it's a great marketing technique, especially on nights out and people ask where you get your jewellery from :)

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

The general feel of the 'rock' scene in the UK and 'old skool' tattoo designs. I'd say my main demographic is the 'alternative' subculture so I take a lot of inspiration from designs associated with them.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

Still running Toxic Cherry hopefully. And fingers crossed by then it will have taken off internationally. It is my great passion at the moment. And I'd love it to be a big part of my future.

Well my name is Joanne, Jo for short and I am 19 almost 20. Ever since I was young, I have loved anything involving art and making things. I studied art at secondary school and carried it on at college receiving a national award and a national diploma for art and design. Throughout college and school, I managed to get my hands dirty and create things which I loved. Delicious Secrets started earlier on this year. I got the ideas from other jewellery designers. Whenever I have browsed jewellery within shops and online, I also thought it’ll be amazing to be able to create my own. Other people have been my inspiration.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I am based in Kent, United Kingdom. I live at home with my parents and siblings so I create everything from home.

Q. What made you get into crafting?

I’ll say from a young age of enjoying Art and design it is from this that is has progressed from. Inspirations from other jewellers and other pieces have also had a take on this.

Q. What are your favourite items to make?

I really like making the ‘candy’ items the most. Each charm is unique from the one before and the one after this. My favourite charms I’ve made are the gingerbread men and the cookies.

Q. What are your most popular items on Delicious Secrets?

I’ll have to say, the Filigree butterfly which is the Facebook profile image, has become the most popular and has drawn a lot of attention to Delicious Secrets. Also, the mini jar collections have attracted a lot of eyes.

Q. Do you wear your jewellery & accessories yourself?

I wear the belt look bracelets on a daily basis. My favourite ones I wear are the blue and white, together. As for my other items, I haven’t worn any of these yet because I have small stock because I have just started up and I don’t want to little amount of my items in case customers wanted them. I have a few ideas and items coming up and I will defiantly be taking one out for myself of these.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

Anything cute, vintage or girly becomes an inspiration to me. As well as other jewellery designers.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

Besides jewellery crafting, I also have a passion for photography. I’ll hopefully like to see myself making this more of a career for myself and keeping up with the jewellery designing.

Interview with Vicki of Embroidery Emporium!

Q. So tell us a bit about yourself and Embroidery Emporium

OK, well I'm Vicki! I recently graduated in music but sewing it seems, has taken over my life :) I got taught how to cross stitch when I was about 7 or 8 and have always enjoyed making things by hand. I've been making cross stitched cards for friends and family for several years now and really love creating that perfect card for a special occasion. It's only really been since I finished University and regained some free time that I have started trying to advertise the things I make more on the Internet and start selling custom made items. As well as cross stitching cards and gifts I have also started making embroidered felt key rings, which are great fun to do!! The other part of Embroidery Emporium is historical embroidery. I have recently started to become more and more involved with historical re-enactment, and spend a lot of time making recreations of historical embroidery, such as black work as part of various different costumes.

Q. What made you get into crafting and embroidery?

Hmm I've always loved making things and sewing is something that I enjoy doing. I've always hated hunting around the shops for the right card or gifts for people so started making more and more things myself. It's a great feeling when you give someone a card or present that has been totally handmade and seeing how much they love and appreciate what you have given them.

Q. What are your favourite things to embroider?

Hehe all of it!! I love making the cards. Most of them are quite quick and easy to make, and I get to do so many fabulous little designs which I know the person receiving will love! I love making the larger cross stitch gifts as well. I especially like working with the designs that are all a single block colour. So simple yet so effective. Blackwork is another favourite. Probably the most time consuming and tricky of the bunch as it involves so much fine detail, but seeing the end result is just amazing. And the fact that the blackwork is then worn by others as part of their historical costumes is just great to see :) I love all of it really!!!

Q. What are your most popular items?

Cards. Definitely the cards. I never seem to stop making them, and always have several on the go all the time.

Q. Where can people purchase your crafts?

Currently only via my facebook page - Embroidery Emporium Sewing. But I am working on a website at the moment as well, which will hopefully be up and running soon :)

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I think I'd have to say my main inspiration for embroidery would have to be the paintings of Holbein. It amazes me that someone can paint with that much detail in their work, that even 400 years later people can still recreate Tudor embroidery from his paintings. Amazing stuff.
Also, I'd never really thought about putting my creations on the net before and trying to sell them, until I saw some of the amazing crafty ladies on facebook setting up shops, and it really inspired me to put the things I make out there with them :)

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

Ah, um hopefully selling lots of things on my own website and making people happy with the things I create them :). I'd love to get a stall up and running and travel round craft fairs selling my items as well as that would just be brilliant! Ideally a shop full of my handmade goodies would just be fantastic :)

'My wife Deann and I launched our company and Web site MetalDogz.com on Halloween night 2008. We both have been major metal heads and horror fanatics since we were kids and have been immersed in the hard music scene for 28 years. I spent 10 years of my life working for a metal music marketing company in NYC and my wife is a long time communications and media specialist. If there was one thing we had in common besides music and horror movies, it is our love of animals.

We got our very first dog in early '08. One day I told my wife to search the net and order him some cool rock or metal tees. I was sure there was somebody out there doing them. She found very little. There were a few parody tees and a couple of band logos, which I'm sure the company didn't have the licensing rights for, and that was about it. Sure there were plenty of skull and bones and guitars, but nothing cool or original. You can buy those types of shirts in a Wal-Mart. So I thought there was a market for dog tees, bandanna's, etc. for head bangers and their pooches. One thing we were sure of is people will do anything for their pets. I sketched out some ideas, did some trade marks, came up with a business plan for K9 world domination and MetalDogz was born.

MetalDogz is based in New Jersey, USA. We are approaching this like any young band would. Start in the basement with long hours and alot of hard work, become known locally and then move on from there. We vend our merch at concert festivals, pet expos and hip flea markets. We also do consignments or wholesale, basically whatever it takes. We have recently set up shop on dates of Music As A Weapon, M3 Rock Fest, Mayhem, and Uproar Fest, as well as horror conventions such as Chiller and Rock & Shock. Someday I would love to do a whole tour.

85% of our customers are women, which I guess should come as no surprise. I would have to say our most popular design by far is our Metal Doggie "Paws Up" logo followed by the Death Metal Doggie "Pentagram in dog bones" logo.

We have one dog who has been our total inspiration, a Papillon named Ville who loves wearing our tees. We also have 3 cats, but we have no plans for MetalPussy as of yet. LOL

In 5 years I would like to see us progressing into more and more products, getting our stuff out to more bands and artists, growing the business and being able to quit our day jobs and make a living at this.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself?

Well, I'm a monster-loving graphic designer and illustrator. I'm the art director at Rue Morgue Magazine and I've devoted my life to the genre I love most... horror!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

Toronto, Onterrible Canada.

Q. What made you get into graphic design?

I've always had an interest in art. It was a hobby for many years until I went to art school, then I took a three year graphic design course, graduated and found work in the big city.

Q. Your main focus is horror, has it always been a love of yours?

Very much so! As far back as I can remember.

Q. What have been your favourite pieces to design?

The Pray for the Monster's series was a lot fun to do. It's sort of where I'm at spiritually. Monsters are my religion!

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

There are lots of artist that inspire me, but Basil Gogos, Charles Burns, Robert Crumb... the list goes on and on. Music is also a big inspiration. If I wasn't doing art, I would probably be doing music in some form or another.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

Doing what I do now, drawing monsters!

Q. Tell us a little about you and Lily's Emporium

I myself am Lily, a girl that doesn't take anything seriously! I established Lily's Emporium in January 2010 when I finally plucked up the courage to spread my work across the web. I make anything! Jewellery, hats, cuffs, pillows, paintings, cosplay costumes and accessories... people ask me to make stuff and I try to make it for them!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I'm based in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. I'm a city girl!

Q. What made you start crafting and making jewellery?

I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. When I was really young I'd rip up my Barbie's old clothes then sew parts together and make them new outfits. I only recently started making jewellery this year, but I've been sewing and knitting since as far back as I can remember. I love it, it's something I can get lost in and just forget about the world for a while.

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make?

I love making jewellery that I've always wanted to see! I can remember searching everywhere for a Pokemon necklace and when I started the Emporium I was like, "you know what, I'll make it for myself!!". Necklaces are my favourite items to make, although I love making new rings and hats too!

Q. What are your most popular items on your website?

My pikachu hats! They're cheap, good quality and are SO comfortable, I've just sold my last one again; this is the third batch of them! Another thing I've always wanted yet never found one I liked until I made it!

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I take inspiration from everything, mostly things I loved during my childhood. I get epiphanies when I'm talking to people and I'll say, "hold on, I just had a great idea...". Even whilst writing this I just had an amazing idea for a set of necklaces! I'm a total geek so I get inspiration from all the geeky little things I like. My main inspirations are my two passions in life: science and animals! I love the Japanese pop culture too, a lot of stuff inspired by these things are coming soon!

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

I'd like to be a bit more established in the crafting industry. As much as I love it, I never want it to be a full time job, it would take all the fun out of it. I want to be a scientist, but I'd never give up crafting for the world! It earns me some extra money during the summer and keeps me occupied when I'm bored! I love what my little hobby has become and I can't wait for it to grow, I want people to adore my jewellery and anticipate new creations from me. My greatest ambition for Lily's Emporium would be to have cute little high street boutiques stocking my jewellery or maybe even a shop of my own, but a girl can dream for the time being right?

I'm a 20 year old female from a small town who is absolutely unhappy with where my life is. I started creating jewelry out of boredom and realized that I actually really liked making it and that some of it was super cute. The stuff started to build up around my house, I brought some to work and people started buying the necklaces I was making. I then decided, hey why not start building this as an online business and I realized that maybe I would like to do this in the future. Cinder's Creations was just the outcome of that.

I am based in a small boring town in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Q. What made you start crafting?

Boredom to be honest, I've always been artsy fartsy, but in such a small town there is nothing to do so I started crafting when found the other artsy things I did weren't for me.

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make?

I like making necklaces, especially colorful ones. Rainbows make my heart happy.

Q. What are your most popular items?

Butterfly necklaces seem to be the favorite.

I don't really have an inspiration, to be totally honest it's out of sheer boredom that I decided to start making jewelry.

Temporary:Secretary (http://www.temporary-secretary.com/) started in early 2008. We have grown a lot as a brand since then. I began making things for friends and family. Then I sold a few pieces on eBay. I notched up a website by myself and decide to create a brand that would offer something special without the designer price tag. It is affordable yet exclusive. We produce things in small quantities, therefore, a slim chance that you will see someone else wearing the same jewellery. Q. Where in the world are you based?

Temporary:Secretary started in Newcastle. That is where I went to uni at. I loved it. But at the moment, I am back in a little town in the north that I call home. It has a castle and a river, lots of charity shops and lots of cobbles! (Which is almost impossible to walk on if you're wearing heels!) An interesting fact for you is that Lewis Caroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, attended school here in Richmond in the 1840's. The school building is still used. It's very Gothic and the playground is the shape of a coffin. Very bizarre.

Q. What was it that made you start producing jewellery?

Temporary:Secretary was created shortly after I completed an internship at a fashion and accessories company. I studied Fashion Marketing at University and had always thought that once I graduated, I would try to get a job with a big snazzy fashion brand. I also studied fashion at college so for the total of six year, I did a lot of designing, pattern cutting, illustrating, styling, sewing - some examples of my work are on the blog. I love fashion in every way and I wouldn't have had it any other way! So anyway, I had a few work placements and it made me take my head out of the clouds to realise what I could learn about myself and what was really right for me. Because I had started the business during university, I didn't take it seriously - It didn't really start out as a jewellery brand, I didn't find a direction to go in to at first. I played around with garments and making skirts, sourcing vintage items. It was extra pocket money for doing something I love. It has been the best job ever, and although I did a lot of pondering after my time at uni had finished, I am glad to find my feet and decided to carry on doing this after graduation. 2010 has been an exciting year for Temporary:Secretary, let's just hope it carries on getting better and better!

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make?

There are a few but my favourite product to make is the Keep Calm and Carry On pendants, they come in 6 different colours and they look great when it all comes together as a finished product. Similarly, the doll face necklaces are fun to make. I love name necklaces and I've got 4 of them! But I thought "what about face necklaces! That could work!". There are 24 doll faces to choose from so hopefully, everyone can find one that looks like them. Another fun product to make is the cupcake charm bracelets. My favourite is the gold - it makes the cute cupcake charms stand out so much more than the silver.

Q. What are your most popular items?

It is definitely the Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz products. One of our very first products launched on the website was Welcome to Wonderland necklace, it is one of our best sellers, along with our Alice bracelets which have been featured in Heat and Look magazine. The Wizard of Oz necklaces are popular too, it is the little ruby slippers that I love making. They are originally silver but i glitter them to give it that classic Wizard Of Oz magical sparkle! The glitter goes absolutely everywhere and I see red glitter about for weeks! But it's definitely worth it.

Q. Do you have any new projects coming up?

Since end of June, I have been working on the autumn and Christmas range. Lots of cute and quirky jewellery coming up! The first new batch from the latest range will be launched in the first week of September.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I get inspiration from everything. Everything and everyone around is inspires me. I sometimes think that I should settle on one style but I am open minded to everything - which kind of explains why the jewellery on my website ranges from loud, colourful kitsch to subtle, vintage style pieces.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

Although I have answered this question so many times, this is always a tricky one, I am the most indecisive character when it comes to thinking ahead. If I was asked what I want to do in the next 5 minutes, I would quickly decide and then have no time to change it. But knowing that I've got 5 years to change my mind, I would list a bunch of things, change my mind, go round in circles (OK, maybe go round in 10 circles!) and then possible end up with a plan. Right now, my thoughts for the next 5 years are to build and develop Temporary:Secretary as a strong brand, and hope to expand it. It would be also be awesome if I ended up in London in 5 years time, too.

Hi my name is Emma & I'm the creator of Neon Paws Ltd. Neon Paws is the Number 1 online store in the UK which specialises in alternative accessories for dogs & cats!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

We're based in Nottingham, UK, but we ship all over the world!

Q. What made you start out your own doggy clothing website?

Well, I had been selling various things on the Internet for a while & was looking for an area to specialise in. I was looking for accessories for my cats I noticed that there was an overwhelming amount of cute accessories but not really any alternative options...being a rock chick I couldn't see my pets in all frills & bows, so there was my inspiration for Neon Paws! I spoke to a lot of pet owners from the alternative scene & found that I was not alone, so decided to create a store specialising in alternative accessories for dogs & cats.

Q. Do you have dogs? Do they wear your clothing ranges?

I have cats at the moment who have quite a few things from the site, -I don't think they would let me put any of the clothes on them, though! We have had 100% positive feedback from dog owners about the site, which is very important to us, as we are passionate about what we do. We have just set up a section on our Facebook page where people can upload their pet pictures so hopefully we will see some photos of Rock N Roll dogs & cats modelling Neon Paws items soon!

Q. What are your most popular items?

Dog t-shirts are always popular, but we expect the new items will soon become favourites as they are super cool!

Q. Do you have any new designs or products coming up soon?

We have just added two new retractable dog leads by Puchi in Zebra & Tiger Swarovski designs, a spiked dog collar & lead set, & a leopard print bowl as well as a wider range of sizes in many items. We are always on the look out for great new items to add to the site, & are always eager to improve our range.

I'm third culture gal, Thai by blood with a mix of this and that. I lived in Chicago, Melbourne, now Bangkok, and I'm sure there will be more cities in the future! ;) My Jewelry line is named after my mom 'Uma.' We design the pieces together, so its a mother daughter collaboration. My mothers style is more elegant, where mine is more funky. therefore I like describe Uma Jewelry as 'Elegantly Funky' Our pieces are unique, bold, and give a statement. We want to make ladies of all ages feel more beautiful and confident with our pieces. It gives off a lot of energy!

Right now I'm based in Bangkok, Thailand! I plan on going to Canada or back to Australia in the next year or two!

My mother originally was a full time jeweler. She stopped after she got sick. Now that shes all better, i thought why not start design and making pieces with her again. Art has always been in my heart, and I love to make pretty shinny things! Ladies love that!

i love making necklaces! They are more striking then earrings or bracelets. I love to use colorful stones. I've now discovered crystals which I also love!

Definitely! Gotta promote promote! Plus it always funks up an outfit!

It's in my blood, all the women in my family are all crafty in their own ways - ranging from crochet / knitting, drawing and painting to graphic design.

I've been creating since I was little and I've always been artistic, being brought up in a creative environment is definitely a big part of that.

I love making commissions and custom orders for my customers, its so personal and I always love a challenge :).

Creating something unique for someone is really nice, especially as there is so much mass-production in the fashion world.

Q. Do you wear the jewelery/ accessories yourself?

Absolutely!

My products are definitely all my style and I always wear them out, I wouldn't ever sell a product I wouldn't be happy to wear myself. :)

I'm very inspired by the human body, the inner workings and the outer 'coating' as such.

I started out making anatomical pendants which then progressed into exploring how people 'accessorise' themselves, from body modification to good old personal style.

I'm very inspired by Rockabilly/Psychobilly and Punk styles too.

I'm hoping to branch out a lot with VV, there's a lot of exciting stuff in the pipeline :).

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and C-Unique

A. Well I've always loved making things and watching my mum sew as a child. Then when I was 15 and going through a slightly Gothic phase, I decide I wanted a long black skirt for school to wear with my Docs, but I couldn't find one in any shops. So, I went to the local fabric shop, bought some fabric and went home and made one. After that I was hooked, I made weird and random things for my friends so that we looked different to everyone else. After what seemed like years of making clothing for myself and close friends, interest started to grow and I started to make clothes on a more professional level. As time has gone by, I am now very busy with a large range of ladies clothing and accessories, including hand bags and jewellery.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

A. I am based in Worcester, England.

Q. What made you get into crafting/ clothes making?

A. I've grown up making anything and everything! It's so satisfying to see the end result of something you've worked hard on. I remember being about 8 years old and selling friendship bracelets I had made, in the playground.

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make? What materials do you most like to use?

A. I'd say hand bags are my favourite things to make, although I always want to keep them all! I like to work with cotton the most, it's easy to use and gives a good structured end result to my clothing.

Q. What are your most popular items?

A. My most popular items are the 'Marilyn' and the 'Gypsy' tops. The 'Gypsy' top suits any shape or size and comes in many different colours and fabrics!

Q. Do you wear the jewelery/ clothing yourself?

A. Absolutely! Being tall and slim, I find it hard to get alternative clothes to fit. I started out making stuff just for myself, It never occurred to me that the items I had made to satisfy my tastes would prove so popular with friends and people I have never met! It always makes me feel good inside when a stranger compliments me on something I'm wearing that I've made.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

A. My inspiration can come from really random everyday things, but I'd probably say that music is my biggest inspiration. Different genres produce different outcomes for my designs. The 1950's and tattoo culture plays a huge part in my most recent ranges, I love combining the two and getting a 50's look with an edge.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

A. I'd like my creations to be available in more shops, not just in the UK, but worldwide. It's a slow process, but I'm sure I'll get there.

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and Vintage Princess

Okay, well I'm Laura and I'm 22. I graduated from university last year and since then I've been crafting more and more! I've always been creative, and making and reworking pieces of clothing or jewellery has always been something I've loved to do- knowing you are wearing something unique, that no-one else in the world has is very exciting! That's why I set up Vintage Princess. I sell one off items with a vintage, girly, unique and utterly gorgeous style!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I'm based in a little village just outside of Durham, in the North East of England.

Q. What made you get into crafting?

I started jewellery making a long time ago. I've always been pretty creative, I love making things, drawing, painting, reworking and customising clothing and jewellery anything like that really. Being a girly girl who loves anything sparkly, pink, girly and pretty I absolutely loved jewellery making. I also love the idea of wearing something unique and individual which is something the high-street did certainly not offer! So I made my own :)

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make? What materials do you most like to use?

I really do love making all my works. I'm always so excited making the pieces and then seeing people's reactions to them. I love thinking that people out there are making something I have made- especially the one off pieces.

I don't really have a preferred material. I like to use everything and anything in my jewellery!

Q. What are your most popular items?

My Lady Vintage cameo necklaces, my peach lace bangles or my custom charm bracelets. They are very popular as I customise them for every customer, therefore no two are ever the same. I also allow the customer to choose the charms they would like on their bracelets, so its even more personal to them and I think people appreciate that :)

Q. Do you wear the jewelery/ accessories yourself?

Oh yes definitely! I love wearing pieces of jewellery that I know are one-offs and that no one else in the world are wearing. I have lots of accessories though, I'm a complete sucker for them! I also wear lots of pieces made by my lovely crafting friends :)

Q. Where can people buy your pieces? Do you make custom pieces?

My collection is available to buy online, on my Folksy site, or through my shop facebook account and page.

I certainly do make custom pieces! I love it! Its so much fun when a customer comes to me asking for something and I get my thinking cap on and come up with ideas for them. The most exciting commission I've had so far has to be being commissioned to make a necklace for a customer to wear to her wedding. Its such a magical thing to be asked and for her to be wearing it on such a special day makes me practically giddy with excitement!

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I don't really have a set person who is my inspiration. My inspiration is really the pieces I find to rework! Each piece I come across inspires me to make something out of it and that drives me to create things rather than following a trend or

Anyone who knows me knows I'm ultra girly and a sucker for anything pink, flowery, sparkly and just generally beautiful and gorgeous, so my works are more themed than based on an individuals style...

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

I'd absolutely love to have my own pretty little shop! I know exactly how I'd like to decorate it, in an old-world-y style with lots of pretty handmade accessories, pink and flowers everywhere! Oh it would be beautiful!
I really do hope to still be crafting and selling my jewellery because I love it so much. I really can't imagine myself doing anything else!

Tell us a bit about yourself and Extacy Photographic?

Well, I’m Tara. I’m 19 years old, a goth in denial and I’m a bit of a geek who’s besotted with Japan and anything shiny ;D I started Extacy Photographic in late 2007- I originally started it as a hobby but it has pursued into a business and I love it!

Where in the world are you based?

I’m currently based in Bedfordshire in the UK. I’m a keen traveller so I often end up in far off countries!

What got you interested in the world of photography?

Studying Art and Design throughout school and college got me really exploring all aspects of art and materials, but apart from drawing, there was nothing that I really loved to do apart from photography. I used my mums simple point and shoot camera, starting with scenery and after getting a starter SLR camera (a Nikon D40) for Christmas in 2007 I started taking pictures of my friends and then professional models. I have now progressed to a Nikon D300s with various lenses and I haven’t looked back!

Do you prefer studio or location?

I love both, but at the moment I really enjoy studio work. My personal project this year is happening at Switch Photography Studios down in Sussex. My last personal project was on location so it’ll be good to see how they compare to one another!

What do you look for in a model?

I enjoy working with models who love what they do and will give 100% at a shoot, but also someone who isn’t afraid to have fun! Look wise, I’m quite picky when it comes to models, preferably I like them to have a quirky look, clear skin and a lean body (please note that I didn’t say skinny, I LOVE curves!) If I have a personal project though, I have a clear idea of what I’d like the model to look like, or who I want the model to be.

Do you have any favourite models or themes you like to shoot?

My all time favourite model is Lily Cole. I’d love to be able to have the opportunity to photograph her in the future! My more alternative side though adores Mosh. I was meant to work with her in September, 2008, but unfortunately she couldn't get a visa for the UK. My favourite models to work with are Ulorin Vex, Sohui, Ruby True and Paradisaea Decora- I always have a brilliant shoot when I work with them, always fun and the pictures are always amazing. Theme wise, I don’t really have a favourite, though at the moment I’m obsessed with anything editorial. I have some amazing shoots booked in August, one being ‘The Albino Queen’ for a book- Watch this space!

Who or what is your inspiration?

I can’t say just one person or thing inspires me- My inspiration is drawn from all over the place! A big influence comes from my friends though, I have an amazing bunch of talented friends who are models and designers, seeing their work and the drive behind what they do is amazing. If you love something enough, you’ll work hard enough to make it become what you’ve always dreamed of.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years?

I’d love to see myself living away from home in a nice apartment or house with someone I love and where I have enough room for my own fully equipped studio. Of course I’d love to be able to make my main source of income from this business too! But, even if that doesn’t happen, wherever I end up I will always be taking pictures!

I'm Clare and I run MustDestroyJewellery. The company is a one women affair and I run it alongside my full time job in a nursery.

All my time is spent working, although I sometimes take time off to cover myself in more tattoos!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

MustDestroyJewellery is a home run business, we're based in a little Essex town called Grays.

Q. What started your love of making unique jewellery?

I started making the jewellery after I got fed up with not being able to find anything I liked in shops - and when I could find something I liked it would cost an arm and a leg.

I decided to have a go myself and made a few bits for myself and for friends and family a gifts.

I started getting lots of requests for different designs and it then dawned on me to have a go at setting up an online shop....the rest is history!

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make? What materials do you most like to use?

My favourite pieces are the anchorsm I love that they can be personalised with a name or word of the customers choice - they look really simple and effective.
My favourite materials are acrylic and plastic - you can do more with them than you'd think!

Q. What are your most popular items?

My most popular items are the anchors - I think this is due to the ability to personalise them - it means the customer is getting something unique and special to them.

Q. Do you wear the jewelery/ accessories yourself?

I don't really wear much jewellery - which must sound really odd for someone that makes and sells it.
I pretty much just have the jewellery that I was pierced with in, my husband hates it as it means gift buying is a nightmare - no fallback gifts of jewellery!
I will occasionally make myself a hair clip to wear, my favourite is the skeleton hand clip I wore for my birthday this year.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I love the art work by Sailor Jerry and Vice Ray.

My late nan was also a huge inspiration,she was always offering praise and encouragement. She also paid for my first piercing so she's probably responsible for my obsession with piercings and tattoos etc

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

I'd love to relocate to somewhere like Brighton and have a little shop by the sea....but if that doesn't happen then I'll be happy to still be plodding along with lots of happy customers.

as my love for all things horror it just seemed the sensible thing to merge the two loves and start creating the items that I myself would like you buy, but couldn't find. I have art degrees but it's more about learning on the job, finding what works and what doesn’t. My etsy store is just a reflection of all my loves, retro, horror, music and the macabre. it's just a bonus to me that people seem to really dig what I'm doing.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I'm currently based in Wiltshire, which is near Stonehenge, but I actually hail from Slough in the south of England, you know, where the Uk comedy show The Office is based.

Q. What made you start creating horror inspired items?

It just came from a love of that genre of films and culture really, plus as I started to become more involved with the horror scene I was aware of how little horror themed accessories there were out there, so
it just seemed to make sense that I would start making my own. as I did people asked me where I got them or if I would make something for them and it just snowballed from there. I also make the official merchandise for the death rock and rollers
Devilish Presley which were received really well and got the Lipstattoo brand out to the very people I was trying to reach. Those guys really helped me out.

Q. You've had a great success with your 'human centipede' necklaces - what made you design this piece?

It was actually just to satisfy my childish nature, I just thought it would be funny, then I tweeted the picture ( on twitter as lipstattoo666 ) and the orders and requests just came pouring in. It's pretty much with thanks to a chap on twitter ( V_for_vienetta ) who showed the picture to Nick Frost of Shaun of the dead fame and he wanted one and then Rt'ed the link to my store and it just went mental, it's currently have 60,00 views, 37 hearts and I’ve actually lost count of how many I have sold. I was also really happy when I received a message from the head of the centipede Akihiro Kitamura who also praised my necklace as did the Human Centipede official UK twitter feed. I'm currently selling a full sequence necklace on my etsy ready for when the second film comes out!

Q. Have you always been into art and craft?
Always, more crafting than painting to start with, I would always get art materials for birthdays and Christmas and loved clays and poly clay to sculpt with, but as I got older and when to school and then college I focused more on my drawing and painting skills, so I now feel I'm a good at most artistic trades, but designing jewellery and painting portraits is what I think I'm best at, but I'm always open to trying and learning new skills.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?
Horror in any form, music, art, films, actors anything I feel I have a strong connection with is a catalyst for me to create. I'm currently getting back involved with the Rocky horror show and will be making bits of costumes and accessories for that.

Q. What do enjoy creating the most?
I Love painting portraits of people who interest or inspire me, and working with shrinkies as its so versatile.

Q. Do you have any new projects coming up?

Devilish Presley have a new album coming out so I will be working on a new range of merchandise for them, they have a new song called Horror movie head, which is conjuring up all kinds of wicked delights for me to get designing. I'm also hoping to trade at more craft shows. I'm also going to start a new range on my etsy store, but you'll just have to keep your eyes open for that =)

Q. What made you get into crafting?

I've tried my hand at most arty/crafty things, I love doing anything creaative, but when I began making jewellery 4 years ago I realised that was wht I love most. It started out as a hobby, and I used to make presents for friends, but now I love being able to sell it to complete strangers who love it too.

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make? What materials do you most like to use?

My favourite pieces are probably those compsed of lots of unusual chains, recycled jewellery and found objects. It's a very natural way of working, I never really have a design, I just see how things fit together.

I also like making pendants from my own illustrations, but a lot more time and effort goes into them so I don't get to make as many.

Q. What are your most popular items?

My plush zombie necklace and my anatomical heart necklace has probably been my most popular overall, but other than that there's no real trend, I sell a bit of everything. This is probably because I have such a diverse range of jewellery. There's something for everyone.

Q. Do you wear the jewelery/ accessories yourself?

I do, but not as much as I should. I try to remember to, and if I'm going out at night I do tend to, but day to day I don't like to wear a huge amount of jewellery. Sometimes a necklace or a ring, but I don't tend to wear bracelets because they get in the way while I work, and I have stretched ears so I don't wear earrings.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I couldn't pinpoint one thing or person, I draw inspiration from everything, and everyone, friends, colleagues, other crafters I have met or whose blogs I follow. I spend a lot of time flicking through fashion magazines and online so I draw inspiration from lots of different places.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

I would love to be doing my jewellery full time and be able to fully support myself from it, though I also work as a makeup artist and love the fashion and film industries so I would like to still be working in those aswell. I need to dabble with a bit of everything to keep myself satisfied so I'm sure even in 5 years I'll be working in several fields.

I'd love to expand my jewellery ranges and maybe take some courses so I can work in some other mediums and experiment with some other items such as clothing and bags.

I'd love to travel more and maybe work in different countries. I'm absolutely in love with New York City so maybe spend some time there and think about taking RB international.

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and Sacre Coeur

Well, my name is Tea and I am an artist, designer, taxidermist and occasional model. I own and single-handedly run Sacré Coeur full-time from my home studio. Sacré Coeur was born from my inability to find the sort of accessories I wanted for myself either in the shops or online. What initially seemed like the perfect way to accessorise my own wardrobe soon became a business idea when people started showing an interest in my work with a view to buying it for themselves. So, it was officially created in 2006 and catered for contacts and friends offline originally while I studied for my degree... then in 2008 I launched it online and it has been going from strength to strength ever since!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I am based in Hertfordshire, UK. Conveniently, I am only 25 minutes away from central London so that works rather well!

Q. What made you start creating jewelery & wearable art?

As I mentioned, I had difficulty finding the sorts of accessories I wanted for myself initially. I think a lot of designers would admit that this was a driving force behind their endeavours! I like to have something a bit different and I like to be able to accessorise my outfits according to my mood. Most of what I make is black so I'm not sure what that says about my and my mood really!! Basically, I wanted to bring something a bit different to the table and try my hand at new techniques that I wouldn't usually use in my art. I view my life as one big experiment really... I like to try new things and play with them until I find something that works. Most of the things I do that I am most passionate about are self-taught. So, to sum up, gaps in my wardrobe and my insatiable desire to learn are probably what started it all off!

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make?

It's hard to choose! I love sewing, so fabric and leather collars are my favourites out of all I think. I do love messing about with old watches though... I go into mad scientist mode when I've got loads of watches to play with, I can usually be found hunched over my desk with lamps and magnifiers, tweezers and clamps etc all over my desk, painstakingly dissecting tiny mechanisms and piecing them back together like some sort of little clockwork Frankenstein! Saying that, my cameo designs have been a labour of love for the last few months so I love making those too as it's so satisfying seeing my own hand carved designs translated into resin and applied to cute necklaces, rings and other bits and pieces!

Q. What are your most popular items?

To date I would say the most popular items were my pocket watch collage pendants. They sold out earlier this year and I am still on the lookout for suitable old timepieces with which to make a new run of them. The cameo stuff is catching up quick though!

Q. As detailed on your website, you trained as a taxidermist, what interested you in this subject?

Well, having always been fascinated by animals and nature, I was fixated by taxidermy from a very young age. I am lucky enough to live very close to Tring Zoological Museum which houses an enormous collection of specimens from the Victorian era onwards. I imagine it was probably something to do with the fact that I could get close enough to animals like lions, tigers, rhinos and weird and wonderful birds and fish to properly inspect their every last detail without it either running away or killing me! The fascination remained and when I was studying biology at uni, I decided to start learning. I found a master taxidermist in Wales who was willing to teach me, went and spent a few days with him and his wife and came back with enough of a foundation to continue teaching myself. I'm still very much a beginner now in my opinion... it'll take many many years of working consistently to even come close to matching some of the work I've seen over the years. It takes incredible skill and patience to realistically recreate a living creature.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

My main inspirations are the natural world, history and, to an extent, the occult. Whereas the former two are quite evident in my work, I would say the latter inspires me very subtly, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any signs or symbols of occultism in any of my work to date... I draw mainly from the symbolism of certain animals and colours etc.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

Definitely still running Sacré Coeur full-time, earning a decent living from it and developing my skills in taxidermy further. My long term ambition is to eke out a career for myself as an artist/designer and continue along that path for the rest of my life.

Q. Please tell us a little about you and your website

I love Gothic and horror photography, which can be seen on my website at http://www.amandanorman.com/.
I’ve been described by those who don’t know me as morbid and a bloody weirdo for my love of photographing cemeteries and taking dark portraits, but I just find humanity amusing sometimes. Don’t you?
I have a passion for the ‘dark side of life’. I love to feed my thirst for knowledge and I don’t believe that anyone should stop learning things in life, especially those things that are unknown. I like how the unknown scares the mundane amongst us.
I love to do Tarot readings for friends and I have a strong interest in vampires, but I hate Twilight.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I’m based in the land of the Cheshire cat in a town called Warrington, which is in the North West of England.

Q. What made you become a photographer?

I’m not a professional photographer yet, but I hope to be one day. I just love trying to capture the dark atmosphere of places I see.

Q. Your photography focus's on the Dark side of
things, has this always been your main focus?

It’s ALWAYS been my focus as I have a love of old Gothic Horror films like Hammer Horror that inspires my work. I’ve also witnessed true horror in my lifetime and perhaps that’s why I see things differently, but the challenge is getting the atmosphere right so that viewers of my photography can see it as well.

Q. Whats you favourite thing to photograph?

It has to be cemeteries as I could spend all day in some of these places, especially the old Victorian ones. It’s a shame, but as the years roll by and the stone work crumbles and there’s no living relatives left to pay for the upkeep of these grand tombs, we will lose these places and all that will remain is the odd cemetery and lots of photographs.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

I love Simon Marsden’s photography and as I said earlier, other inspiration comes from watching Hammer Horror, Amicus and Universal Horror to name but a few.

Q. Do you have any future projects coming up or new additions to your shop?

I’m currently working on an exciting project at the moment with zombie portrait artist @ChrisZenga. He’s given me his ideas for the sketches he wants to do and I will take the photographs for him to work with.

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and 'Little Miss Delicious'

Hi! I'm Maxine, and I single handedly run a business called Little Miss Delicious, selling handmade jewellery and accessories. When I'm not painting cakes and cutting out felt cookies, I'm studying hard towards a law degree at university (people always find it funny that I refer to my degree as my backup!). I love creativity and it shows in all aspects of my life. Crafting is a huge passion of mine, so most of my free time is spent making things or thinking about making things!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, but I live in London for university. They're such diverse places but I love them both!

Q. Have you always been into crafting? How did you get started?

I've been crafting since I was about 12 and couldn't find any bracelets I liked. It started with simply stringing beads together but then I found polymer clay and it was love at first sight! I started just by making things a few things for myself and friends, but it ended up getting put aside for a while due to studying for A levels. Once I got to university I realised that I missed having a creative release and dug out all my old supplies. Once my room in halls began to fill with little clay donuts and ice creams, a friend suggested that it might be time to start selling some of it! Once I set up an Etsy shop I had my first sale on the same day, and since then I've been able to attend various fairs around the country and open up my own online shop.

Q. What are your favourite pieces to make?

I really don't think I can pick a favourite. I just love taking a heap of clay or fabric and watching it become the item I've been picturing in my mind. It's great to have that level of freedom and it means all my work is exactly how I want it, so I guess they are all my favourites!

Q. What are your most popular items?

Currently the breakfast range of necklaces are really popular. I've been craving a full english breakfast for weeks now, so making them out of clay helped keep the cravings down. Well, for a while at least! I'm a completely useless cook, so whenever I tend to crave food it just ends up becoming jewellery instead; clay seems to be the only thing I don't set fire to!

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

Everything! I can get inspired by the smallest things, like a colour combination I see or a pretty cake in a shop. Usually, as I said above, I tend to create whatever food I'm wanting at the time. Making the cookie themed jewellery was definitely the most fun; I couldn't get the colour right so obviously I HAD to buy 10 cookies in the name of "research". Yum.

Q. Do you have any new ideas or projects coming up?

I have lots of exciting ideas and plans coming up in the next few months, but you'll just have to wait and see!

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

I'd love to have a proper shop with a candy strip pattern on the walls, frosting on the windows and a giant ice cream sculpture outside, but something tells me that may not happen within 5 years! In a less ideal world where I don't suddenly inherit vast amounts of money, I would just like to see myself as happy as I am now and still doing what I love.

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and ' Pirate Photography'

I’m Kitten, and Pirate Photography is my alternative photography. My passions are photography, Hello Kitty, country music, my cats and writing. I’m 22 and I live with my partner in a very nerdy flat full of DVDs and figurines. I photograph women almost exclusively, and shoot fashion, fetish, conceptual and artistic nudes.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I’m currently based in Norwich, Norfolk in England. I was previously based in Grimsby, Lincolnshire but moved to Norwich about a year ago.

Q. How did you get into photography?

I’ve always taken photos for fun, and when I started my English Literature degree I was spending a lot of time on my own as I can be quite shy, so I took more and more photos, my parents bought me a Fujifilm finepix S9600 which is a compact SLR camera and it all spiralled from there! Now I’m obsessed hehe

Q. What do you look for in a model?

Something unusual, something striking, eyes that can show emotion. I’m not necessarily looking for a high fashion stick thin model, I’ve photographed everyone from agency signed fashion models to plus size heavily tattooed models, there just needs to be a little something that makes me want to take your photo. Currently I’m loving models with long naturally red hair and lots of freckles like Cintia Dicker, high cheekbones and gap teeth like Lara Stone, and then at the other extreme girls with tattoos on their necks and hands and bald models. I love really pale women and I hate fake tan! Other than that, I’m looking for models who aren’t afraid of having fun and being a bit daft on shoots, who aren’t scared of showing some skin and who want to try something different.

Q. Do you prefer studio or location shoots?

Location definitely, I’ve never even been in a studio! I’d love to get the opportunity to shoot with in a studio but I just don’t have the money to rent one so it won’t happen for a long time. I like juxtaposing and contrasting on location, fashion latex in grungy environments being a favourite of mine. The vast majority of what I shoot is on location or in and around where I live, and mostly shot with natural light.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?

As cheesy as it sounds, beauty. I aim to create beautiful images and show how beautiful the woman in the image is. My photographs aren’t always pretty in the typical way, but that isn’t always the aim, I want to show emotion and tell stories. There are photographers I admire, and models whose look gives me inspiration, country music inspires me to tell stories, and other art inspires me, a word or a phrase might give me an idea. I also have a Lensbaby that inspires me to no end, its such a creative and fun lens and I am always coming up with new ways to use it.

Q. Do you have any new ideas or projects coming up?

I’m working on a project at the moment called ‘Sleep’, I’ve only done one shoot at the moment for it as I’m planning locations and models before I really reveal more of the details. I’m trying to get more into shoot more experimental work, and telling more stories as over the last couple of years I’ve shot a lot of pretty pictures but I want to show more emotion instead. I’m also hoping to move into erotica (not porn might I add) and combine the new styles with that.

Q. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

In an ideal world, I’ve love for me and my partner to be living in the US, him doing the job he is working for on his degree at the moment, and me shooting full time. However, in reality, who knows? I’ll probably still be stuck in England shooting around a day job. Photography is a tough world and I’m not daft, but a girl can dream!

My name is Mafalda and I'm 21, one year away from graduating from Portuguese & English Language, Literature and Culture undergraduate course. I created Sailorettes, Love & Rock n' Roll just two months ago (17th of May!) and it has a bit of all the things I love, being directed to a young and restless alternative & vintage audience who loves the past but lives towards the future. I update it 2-3 times a week with either sporadic art, party, travel features and giveaways or weekly spotlight interviews to cater to a more diverse audience and keep my followers interested!

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I live in Lisbon, Portugal for the school year, and stay with my family in the Algarve on my holidays providing me the chance to write about different places. I'm currently in London, for academic reasons so it's yet another place to write on!

Q. What made you start your blog?

After a great friend created her portuguese blog on retro & vintage lifestyles (http://backtothepast.blogs.sapo.pt) which she unfortunately doesn't have the oportunity to update as much as I do mine I thought why not? It was only a heartbeat away and I had nothing to lose, only to gain - experience, better writing, new acquaintances. It has had an astonishing success so far, so I am very pleased and thankful!

Q. What has been your favourite piece to feature so far?

Hard question! I love all the businesses I feature (otherwise wouldn't) and they are all so unique in their own way that I'm at a loss trying to pick... I can say that my first feature, on Little Miss Delicious' was a very special one since she was the first to believe in me and the blog enough to contribute at the time and is even donating a strawberry necklace for me to give away when I reach 500 Twitter followers (I'm still on the 100s mark so you can still begin to follow and who knows win it?)

If I am able to make a living off it someday, I can only say I'd be absolutely delighted to although it's not the primary reason I'm developing the project for - I'm just trying to fill in a gap I myself found as a reader!

Q. Tell us a little about you and your etsy shop.

I’m an independent artist based in the North West of England. My Etsy store is aimed at selling original horror and tattoo inspired art for affordable prices. I’ve sold art on and off over the years through various means, but finally opened my Etsy store in Novemeber last year. You can also find various other items featuring my art at my store, including; bookmarks, jewellery boxes, ceramic items, greeting cards and gift tags.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

Q. What made you get into painting? Have you always painted horror themes?

I’ve been painting for as far back as I can remember. As soon as I was able to grasp a crayon I was scribbling and doodling. It evolved from there. I’ve always found art my way to express myself, vent anger and as a means of relaxation. It’s like my therapy. My favourite cartoons as a child was Count Duckula and The Real Ghostbusters, so I was always drawing vampires and ghosts as a kid. My grandmother would always let me watch classic horror films at her place, which led me to drawing the characters from them also.

Q. What do you enjoy creating/painting most?
It depends what mood I’m in. Some days I’ll be wanting to draw a monster, the next it’ll be a classic pin-up girl. I always have fun creating zombies, there are just so many ways you can paint them, and they’re also a great subject to use for experimenting art techniques.

Q. Who or what is your inspiration?
I have a variety of inspiration, mainly classic and b-movie horror, traditional western tattoos, pin-up and hotrod art as well as the music I listen to; Horrorpunk, rock‘n’roll, psychobilly and punk bands. And not forgetting the artists who I adore. Tattoo artists such as Allan Graves, Jeff Rassier, Bob Tyrrell and Dan Smith. Plus Lowbrow artists including Vince Ray, Johnny Ace/Kali Verra and KRNPX. The list in endless.

Q. Do you have any plans or new projects coming up?

After many inquiries and requests, I’m hoping to get some prints made by the end of the year. As well, as starting to plan a project to release an art book. I’m also hoping to getting some of my work shown in galleries too!

Q. So tell us who you are and a little about your company (name what you sell etc)
A- U-V-K is an all new label, based in the heart of the North East, We specailise in u-v reactive t-shirts and our saucy slogans and neon text has become instantly recognisable, The idea is based towards the clubbing / rave scene with science fiction influeneces. The label launched just over two years ago, starting out by attending local cyber theme nights such as 'Tech_Noir' in Newcastle. We became an instant hit for our outdoor promotions with 7 models in full neon gear, this was an in your face marketing strategy, recieving attention from local press. Since then we now boast 4 stockists throughout, 2 in the North East and 2 in Scotland, we now also are proud to announce a sponsership with the regions biggest hard dance night, Vice Club.

Q. Where abouts in the world are you based? Are you just online or do you have a shop?

Q. What made you start up U-V-K?

U-V-K (Ultra Violet Kieran) The idea is based on my own alter-ego, Just like a stage name. The idea came about whilist I was working as a freelance model, I started designing my own t-shirts to wear on photoshoots, Then deciding to make a business out of this. Also appearing on a hit BBC3 show helped raise awareness of the brand from here it all took off.

Q.What future plans do you have U-V-K? Any new products?

A - We're already onto our second range, however talks of a 3rd range are on-going, I have plans to introduce 3 characters, one being myself another a character used in our x-mas range 'pixel' and the third we may have to sit down and think of. Of course we do plan to move on from t-shirts perhaps into other rave accessories and clothing items.

Q. Do you have any advice for people looking into running there own company?

A- Starting up a company is hard work, dont get into if your just going to quit half way down the line, Build up a reputation, get out and meet people, thats what I did. Even if its just a few people who have heard of your label or product, its better than none, word will get around of your comapny. Also seek advice from buisiness advisors or goverment funded schemes there are plenty out there! Also remeber these are tough economic times, just hold on and dont give up.

Q. So tell us who you are and a little about your business:

A. My artist alias is Miranda Adria, and it’s a name I’ve been using for nearly 9 years. I work as both a professional photographer and graphic designer for Statements2000, an abstract metal art studio, and I freelance as a digital artist.

Q. Where in the world are you based?

I’m located in a little town called Jupiter, FL. It’s literally a 25 minute drive from one end of the town to the other. Haha.

Q. What made you want to start digital artistry?
When I was born, my brothers were already 16 and 18 and very much children of the 80s’ era. They loved playing video games, especially on the Atari. By the time I was 5 or 6, I was playing on the Atari with them. That started up my love for video games and computer animation. As I grew older, I gravitated more towards 2D digital art rather than 3D digital art.

Q. What do you enjoy doing most? and why?

Most definitely, photomanipulation; it’s been my passion since I was 15 or 16. What truly fascinates me about photomanipulation is the idea that you can combine 2, 10, or 100 photos and either create a world of fantasy or create a scene of hyper-reality. I personally enjoy making works that fool the viewer into believing it could actually be a real photograph. I’ve often been told that my photomanips look like scenes out of a movie, which, to me, is an incredible compliment.

Q. What or who is you inspiration?

Music is one of my biggest inspirations. Nearly all of my works are inspired by songs and lyrics, and I often quote the lyrics that have inspired a song in the descriptions of my works. Life is also a very big inspiration, but at the same time, life and music are very closely intertwined for me. Certain songs, albums, and/or lyrics are bookmarks in my life, and the imagery they produce in my head is normally what I try to reproduce in my head.

Q. Do you have any future plans or new projects in line for your site?

I’m hoping to build my own one-woman graphics company. I’m slowly building up a reputation, and making sure to showcase my art whenever possible. One never knows when a great opportunity will come along, so I want to be sure that I have tried every avenue to bring it closer to me. I don’t really have many plans for my website, but I do intend to add more collaborative works in the future.
